Interview With Local Artist, Dottie Clark
Learn about a wonderful local artist based in St. Simons Island.
Tell us about your art style and background.
"I started painting just seven years ago. It was something I always knew I could do, but never took the time to accomplish. Having a career as an Interior Designer and raising three girls occupied my earlier life. One day it just came apparent that I did have time to follow my dream. I would characterize my style as impressionistic. I do not literally paint anything, but give my impression and my feelings about the subject matter. I get lost in the painting and I am surprised by the outcome many times."
I heard you trained in the arts in Europe?
"I have taken three workshops in Europe. Italy, France and Ireland were the locations. Painting in a country is a great way to see it differently than just touring."
The portrait of my children that you painted is one of my prized possessions. Do you take commissions for portraits normally?
"I do take commissions. The portraits that I do are genre (people doing everyday activities). Doing children such as yours is especially rewarding."
What is new in the Golden Isles art community? Any upcoming events or trends that we should know about?
"The Glynn Art Association (which I belong) is now on Facebook. I believe paintings of the marsh will always be the number one topic in the Golden Isles."
Do you do a lot of art shows?
"I had two art shows in 2008. My next one is at the Library in 2010. It takes a lot of time and paintings to do an individual show."
Where can we see your pieces for sale and learn more about your art?
"I show individual paintings regularly at Glynn Art in the St. Simons Village. One can always visit my website for the latest works, prices and events. It is also an excellent tool to reach me about commissions. It is: http://www.dottieclark.com."
