Jesup Drive-In: A Trip Back Into Time
Local drive-in movie theater is a rare treasure and the only one in South Georgia
Did you know that a short 30-minute drive can propel you back in time? Well not literally of course, but a visit to the Jesup Drive-In is truly a rich retro experience. There is something amazing about watching a movie under the stars -- just like people did back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's.
Drive-ins are a pretty rare commodity in today's world. In fact, the Jesup Drive-In is the only drive-in movie theater in all of South Georgia. Being that the establishment opened in 1948, it is pretty amazing to still be in business. Even more surprising is that the theater actually closed in the 60's. Luckily for us, it was reopened in 1970 when they also added a 2nd screen.
Typically one screen is showing something geared for kids or teens, while the other screen is showing a movie a bit more for us older folks. They still have the old speakers on poles that you can pull up next to or you can get the sound to each movie via an FM broadcast they put out.
There is a large grass area up in front of the screen where you can layout on a blanket, sit in chairs or play some Frisbee before the show starts.
The Jesup Drive-In also has a pretty nice snack bar that serves a pretty wide variety of snacks and fast food. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drinks.
Admission is only $7 for adults and $3 for kids 4-11. You also get TWO movies for that price! So a great deal, especially if you factor in the savings on bringing your own grub and drinks...and there is something very unique about watching a movie in the great outdoors.
