To help needy Glynn County residents, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society will accept canned goods Saturday for admission to the St. Simons Lighthouse and Maritime Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station on the island from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The society is asking for two items of canned goods for each visitor at each site and is holding the drive to coincide with the appearance Friday of Ron Hall, one of the authors of "Same Kind of Different as Me." The book tells the true story of the enduring friendship between a rich Texas art dealer, Hall, and Denver Moore, a homeless African-American who lived on the streets of Fort Worth.
Hall will speak at 8 a.m. Friday at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island and Sunday at St. Simons Community Church's 9 and 11 a.m. services. Registration is required for the Friday appearance and may be made by calling (912) 265-0620.
The canned goods will go to Sparrow's Nest in Brunswick, which provided food to more than 3,000 people in the first six months of this year.
