Beach Review: Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island
Driftwood Beach is an eroding beach. This may be somewhat sad, but it also results in a really unique beach area that is worth checking out.
This is one of the best walking beaches in the Golden Isles. While it may not be so good for long picnics or outings (due to high tides that result in very little blanket or chair space), it is worth a visit for the natural beauty you willl find there. The sights are so unique. If you are up to the challenge of occasionally twisting and bending your way through drifwood trees and some light brush -- it is well worth a visit.
On my last trip there we saw three different groups of dolphins and they were very close to the shoreline. So Driftwood Beach is good for seeing wildlife as well.
Speaking of wildlife, if you can make it through to the very end, you will come to a point that usually has an amazing amount of birds - literally hundreds of them. Suddenly the beach widens as you round the tip of the island and you experience a change from the river beach to the ocean beach in a few hundred paces. It is an amazing adventure that you must undertake for yourself.
Getting There
- Go to Jekyll Island
- Turn right at Beachview Drive and go to the St Andrews picnic area.
- Park and walk towards the beach.
- Take a left turn and go as far as you can get.
