Segway Tours Have Arrived on Jekyll Island
A discussion with Rande Simpson of Jekyll Island Fun Tours about Segway tours on the island.
What led you to decide on opening a Segway tour business on Jekyll Island? Tell us about your background.
We live on Jekyll and heard from tourists that they want more activities. We took tours on Segways at Epcot and on Amelia Island and had a great time and though it would be a good fit on Jekyll. Plus we have some friends that are really into Segway destination vacations and thought the idea would be cool for here.
For someone who has never been on a Segway before -- what should they expect?
First they see a safety video from Segway and then we teach them how to ride the Segway PT (personal transporter) in our training area. We take time with everyone to make sure they are completely comfortable.
What parts of Jekyll Island are covered on your tour? Do you do tours elsewhere?
We do tours on the south end of Jekyll through the Maritime Forest. It really is beautiful through there and the trails are wonderful. That tour is narrated so people learn about the Jekyll ecosystem as well as enjoy the Segway ride. For those that want a longer ride, we also added on a trip down to the very south end to St. Andrews picnic area where the Wanderer Monument is. Guests can learn some history, as well as see the nature and ride a fun Segway!
What do the tours cost and how long do they take?
Tours are $30, $60 or $90. The $30 is actually a lesson for people who just want to try a Segway PT, but don't want to commit to a tour (that will) last about an hour. The $60 is for the Maritime Forest tour (just under 2hrs) and the $90 is the forest plus St. Andrews Picnic area (just over 2hrs).
For someone still riding the fence wondering if the tour is worth the expense. What would you tell them?
It is so much fun. Be adventurous and do something different. It will make your vacation memorable.
Any new or future tours or plans in the works?
We hope to eventually expand, perhaps to the historic district on Jekyll Island or the north end. Plus we would love to offer a beach ride (but not sure if can get permission). Perhaps when it is not turtle nesting season. We are also thinking about specialized tours -- like bird watching for example.
For any Segway geeks out there -- what models are you currently renting out? Do you offer daily rentals outside of the guided tours?
We have the all-terrain model tires on Segway X2s. We are only allowed to offer guided rides at this point.
Where can we learn more about your business and keep up to date with events and updates?
